Skeletal System Structure
At birth you had 300 bones in your body. As an adult you'll have only 206. Some of the bones, like the ones in your head, fuse together to form one bone! Its two main parts include the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton includes the skull and the bones that support it, such as the vertebal column, the ribs, and the sternum. The apprendicular skeleton includes the upper and lower extremities, the pelvic gridle, and the shoulder gridle.

Joints are found where two or more bones meet. Joints are often held together by legaments. A ligament is a tough band of connective tissue that attaches one bone to another. In addition, all joints have fluid-filled sacs called bursae located between the bones. The bursae act to absorb shock and keep bones from rubbing against each other. Thick bands of connective tissue called tendons, attach the muscles to the bones.

Skeletal System Functions
The primary function of your skeleton is to provide a framework for the tissues in your body. It aslo protects your internal organs, including your heart, lungs, and brain, and provides movement.
